dc.description.abstractBu çalışma dijitalleşmenin etkisiyle bireylerin selamlaşma pratiklerinde meydana gelen dönüşümü ve emojilerin (dijital semboller) bu süreçteki rolünü incelemektedir. Özellikle emojilerin, bireyler arası iletişimde duygusal ifadeleri güçlendirme ve toplumsal değerleri yeniden şekillendirme süreçlerindeki işlevi araştırılmıştır. Araştırmanın temel amacı geleneksel selamlaşma biçimlerinin dijital sembollerle nasıl yeniden yapılandırıldığını ve bu değişimin bireyler arası samimiyet, aidiyet ve sosyal bağ kurma üzerindeki etkilerini anlamaktır. Çalışma emojilerin yalnızca bireysel ifadelerle birlikte kültürel norm ve değerlerde yarattığı dönüşümle ilgilenmektedir. Çalışma 239 katılımcıyla gerçekleştirilen anket çalışmasına dayanmaktadır. Katılımcıların demografik özellikleri, emojilerin kullanım sıklığı ve işlevselliği bağlamında değerlendirilmiş; yaş ve eğitim düzeyinin bu kullanım üzerindeki etkileri analiz edilmiştir. Genç bireyler dijital platformlarda daha aktif olup emojileri selamlaşma ve duygu paylaşımı için kullanırken, yaşlı bireylerin emojilere daha mesafeli yaklaştığı görülmüştür. Eğitim düzeyi de emojilerin eleştirel ve bilinçli bir şekilde kullanımı üzerinde belirleyici bir faktör olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Araştırma sonucu elde edilen bulgular emojilerin sosyal bağlamlarda güçlü bir araç olduğunu ancak resmi iletişimde sınırlı bir rol oynadığını göstermektedir. Emojiler geleneksel selamlaşma biçimlerini tamamen ortadan kaldırmak yerine bu pratiklere yeni bir boyut eklemektedir. Bununla birlikte emojilerin kültürel kapsayıcılığı destekleme potansiyeline rağmen, insani değerlerin ve kültürel mirasın korunması için teknolojik gelişmelerin etik ve sosyal bağlamlarla dengelenmesi gerekliliği ortaya konmaktadır. Çalışma emojilerin sosyal, kültürel ve duygusal iletişimdeki rolünü anlamaya yönelik yeni bir perspektif sunmakta ve gelecekte geniş kapsamlı araştırmaların gerekliliğine işaret etmektedir.
dc.description.abstractTechnological advancements and digitalization have profoundly transformed individuals' communication practices, reshaping traditional forms of social interaction. However, the rapid technological innovations of the modern era have altered the nature and meaning of these rituals, turning them into digital symbols and redefining them through emojis. As tools reflecting individuals' emotional expressions, emojis establish new meaning systems in social contexts and contribute to strengthening social bonds. This study examines the function of emojis in interpersonal communication, their impact on traditional values, and how this transformation shapes cultural codes. The research explores how digitalization has altered greeting practices, the forms in which these practices have been redefined, and their effects on cultural values. The study is based on a quantitative research conducted with the approval of the Ethics Committee of Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University, involving 239 participants. The research collected data on the role of emojis in interpersonal greetings, analyzing their frequency of use and perceived functionality in digital communication, independent of participants' demographic characteristics. The findings indicate that emojis add a modern dimension to greeting practices and reconstruct their relationship with cultural values. While emojis enrich the meaning of communication, they also play a significant role in the transformation of cultural norms. However, this transformation poses the risk of traditional values being forgotten and contributes to the threat of cultural homogenization. These rituals, shaped by cultural codes and norms, have historically served to preserve social values. Yet, the digitalization of the modern world has altered the functionality and symbolism of these rituals. Traditional face-to-face greetings have been transformed into virtual forms through text-based messages, visual symbols, and emojis on digital platforms. In this transformation, emojis have become a key factor in reinforcing emotional expressions and establishing meaningful connections between individuals. The study’s findings highlight that emojis function not only as symbolic tools but also as mechanisms that reshape social norms and cultural values. Emojis, particularly those widely used by digital natives, foster a sense of belonging and intimacy among individuals in digital platforms. However, digital immigrants tend to approach these symbols with skepticism, creating generational differences in the effectiveness of digital communication. Although emojis enhance meaningful interactions in social contexts, the study reveals the misconception that they create a universal language. The different meanings attributed to emojis across cultures emphasize the importance of context and add complexity to meaning construction in digital communication. For instance, an emoji perceived positively in one culture may be interpreted negatively in another. Thus, the study underscores the importance of preserving cultural differences and carefully evaluating context in digital interactions. As digitalization rapidly advances, the role of emojis in interpersonal communication extends beyond merely strengthening social bonds. Emojis contribute to the reproduction of cultural codes and social values. While these symbols provide individuals with new means of self-expression, they also present the risk of eroding cultural heritage and human values. Therefore, the increasing use of emojis and the effort to establish a universal digital language carry the potential risk of creating a homogenized cultural structure. The study associates the future potential of emojis with artificial intelligence and personalization technologies. Emojis could be customized based on users' moods, facial expressions, or message contexts, making digital communication more dynamic and authentic. For example, an AI system could analyze a written message and suggest appropriate emojis to enhance its emotional dimension. Additionally, the integration of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies into emojis may create a more immersive and humanized digital communication experience. However, emojis currently have limited applications in formal communication and remain primarily influential in interpersonal interactions. While they enrich personal expressions, they have yet to achieve widespread acceptance in formal and professional settings. The social, cultural, and emotional functions of emojis should be further explored through interdisciplinary research. Evaluating emojis not only as tools for personal communication but also as instruments that reshape social values will contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage in the digitalized world. The balanced use of these symbols with human values and their development in a way that supports cultural diversity are essential considerations. The future evolution of emojis, particularly with the integration of artificial intelligence and augmented reality, is likely to play an increasingly significant role in digital communication. Considering that technology is a tool created for humanity, it is crucial that these tools are utilized in alignment with ethical principles and human values. The impact of virtual reality and emojis on humanity can be balanced by preserving human connections and cultural heritage. Supporting this process with interdisciplinary approaches and advanced research will allow for a deeper understanding of the societal effects of digitalization.
