The focus of this chapter is on women’s personal lives and experiences in their natal families, upbringing, family relations and extended neighbourhood. It explores the everyday life and customary practices reflecting the research participants’ capability sets and what conversion factors play a role in enactment of agency. This exploration contributes to uncovering overlooked and hidden inequalities existing in women’s lives and suggests actions to open space for revisiting gender justice in Turkey. The findings argue that the family is not a space for women to cultivate agency or achieve capability sets because little or no opportunity is afforded to women to voice their aspirations. Their capabilities are likewise limited by neighbourhood monitoring of girls’ movements, cultural beliefs and practices restricting girls’ freedom and space to manoeuvre their interests, and socialisation of boys and girls into different worlds based on the inequality of the sexes. © 2017, The Author(s).en_US
