Öğe How do household coping strategies evolve with increased food insecurity? An examination of Nigeria's food price shock of 2015–2018(Wiley, 2024) Quinton, Justin; Jenkins, Glenn P.; Olasehinde‐Williams, GodwinFaced with a significant devaluation of its currency and a surge in food prices, the Nigerian government prohibited the use of foreign currency for food imports. This essentially blocked the importation of numerous food items under the guise of stimulating the domestic output of these staples. Consequently, food prices in Nigeria increased despite a global decline in food prices, and the incidence and severity of food insecurity escalated. This study examines the changes in the types and severity of coping mechanisms for food insecurity resulting from the food price shock caused by the oil price crash, currency devaluation, and restrictions on foreign exchange. Nigeria's General Household Survey Panel data from 2012 and 2015, during periods of high oil prices, is compared with data from 2018 when oil prices had remained low, the currency had been devalued, and the treasury had been depleted. Alongside detailed descriptive statistics, logistic and hurdle regressions are employed for statistical analysis. Findings indicate a rise in the percentage of Nigerian households grappling with food insecurity from 2015 to 2018. During this period, 68.7% of households resorted to at least one coping mechanism, 31.8% adopted six or more coping strategies, and 43.2% resorted to severe coping strategies. The issue stems not primarily from natural disasters or conflicts but from a failure in macroeconomic and agricultural economic policies. Our findings confirm that these policies come at great cost, particularly to female‐headed households, single‐parent households, households headed by elderly people, and other vulnerable populations, pushing them deeper into food insecurity.Öğe The effects of industry 4.0 on human resources management(Peter Lang Publishing Group, 2018) Bayraktar, Osman; Ataç, CananThe opportunity of the internet in terms of eliminating the distance and the ability to instantly transfer large data influence many areas of life, and deeply affect industrial production and processes. High-tech manufacturing operations feel these changes earlier. It is inevitable for the enterprises operating with traditional technologies to be exposed to this effect in parallel with the change of environmental structure. In this study, the concept of Industry 4.0 is considered as a concept and secondly how human resources managers perceive this process from the viewpoint of human resources management of the four advanced technology companies operating in the Bursa region is investigated. An in-depth interview method was used to gather information in the study. As a result of the research, the expectation is that the Industrial 4.0 transformation of the industry will deeply affect human resources management processes due to its business environment. At each stage, it is foreseen that technology-integrated business processes will cause some of the unskilled employees to lose their jobs, while the higher qualified employees will be needed more, but it will be difficult to find these employees and keep them at work. © Peter Lang GmbH.Öğe The Rise, Fall, and Recent Revival of Eurocentrism in International Relations Theory(Taylor and Francis, 2016) Yalçın, Hasan Basri[No abstract available]Öğe Harmonizing foreign policy: Turkey, the EU and the Middle East(Taylor and Francis, 2016) Özcan, MesutThe change in Turkish foreign policy towards the Middle East in the post-Cold War era is a highly debated issue, with most experts believing that Europeanization has become the driving force behind this change. This book takes the cases of Iraq and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as two important illustrations. Both cases present dynamic issues of conflict in the region and are high on Turkey’s agenda in terms of its policies towards the region. Focusing on issues related to EU integration, the study examines the formation of a common foreign policy in general and a common policy towards the Middle East in particular. It also investigates decision making in Turkish foreign policy and foreign policy towards the Middle East before and after EU candidature. As such it provides valuable insights into how parties interact with each other and the way in which foreign policies can be harmonized. © Mesut Özcan 2008.Öğe Advanced data processes of some meteorological parameters(CRC Press, 2005) Tokgozlu, A.; Aslan, Z.This chapter provides a case study on the application of curve fitting and harmonic analysis for some meteorological parameters in Isparta. Future projections of air temperature, pressure, rainfall, rate and wind speed data based on polynomial, final intervals and trigonometric functions have been evaluated for the study area. To define the model parameters, data observed in Isparta between 1929-2001 have been considered. Results of the harmonic analysis (Fourier series) and analysis of amplitude and phase values explain the small-, meso-, and large-scale effects on the parameters. The results of this chapter are evaluated and compared with wavelet analysis for this pilot project. This study has a key role to define the climate changing effects on meteorological parameters. © 2006 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. This study aims to shed light on how corporate governance issues affect supply chain processes. To this end, 800 globally listed companies are leveraged and assessed based on their ESG performance by incorporating Thomson Reuters environmental, social, and governance (ESG) scores into these models. The main objective of this study is to assess the extent to which environmental, social, and governance practices influence supply chain performance. To measure supply chain performance, the authors consider various indicators, including supply chain management score, monitoring score, and partnership termination scores. These metrics allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of supply chain processes over our sample period of ten years. To analyze the relationships between ESG scores and supply chain performance, the authors use partial least square (PLS) regression modeling. © 2024, IGI Global. Through this technology, comprehensive point data (point clouds) about the surface of an object can be generated in a highly accurate three-dimensional manner. Furthermore, with the proper software this three-dimensional point cloud data can be transformed into three-dimensional rendering/mapping/modeling and quantitative orthophotographs. In this chapter, the study will present the results of terrestrial laser scanning and surveying which was used to obtain three-dimensional point clouds through three-dimensional survey measurements and scans of silhouettes of streets in Fatih in Historic Peninsula in Istanbul, which were then transposed into survey images and drawings. The study will also cite examples of the facade mapping using terrestrial laser scanning data in Istanbul Historic Peninsula Project. © 2015, IGI Global. The discussions between the parties and the confusion about the concept cause the issue to remain on the agenda. According to the general view, CE is the slowing, shrinking, and closing of the welding flow to increase the welding efficiency. However, little attention has been devoted to measuring the CE level of a given economic system. The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate the emergence and development process of CE, and also to show how the CE level of any economic system can be measured. In this context, it is important for developing countries to interest with the issue but not in practice. To put this into perspective, the study examined Turkey's economic system. Turkey's economic, environmental, and social indicators examined were found to have a remote structure of the CE principle. It is expected that the results of the study will lead to a positive social change and become a framework for increasing the contribution of developing economies to the sustainable world. © 2020, IGI Global. © 2020 by IGI Global.Öğe More obstacles to the Growth of ESCOs in Turkey: Stumble in the midst of a financial distress(IGI Global, 2019) Okay, EsinSustainable and clean sources of energy is an issue of financial challenges for developing countries. Turkey has a considerable potential for a sustainable and cheap form of energy. As a developing country, Turkey implemented policies to improve renewables and energy efficiency in line with EU requirements. But there is incompetence of policy making and practice in which lack of familiarity with infrastructure investment and financing methods challenge renewable energy utilization in Turkey. The weak rule of law does not help to obtain culture, awareness, and consciousness of energy efficiency in Turkey. The enactment of raising awareness of energy saving projects and companies for reducing costs of energy efficiency should be the first priority of government. Beyond infrastructural problems, the key failure of ESCOs is lack of risk culture and poor risk management. Nowadays, the ongoing economic obstacles enhanced and ESCOs are facing financial distress and corporate debt restructuring which will affect the growth of energy savings in Turkey. © 2020, IGI Global. © 2020 by IGI Global.Öğe Neoliberalism, self-identity, and consumer culture in the UAE(IGI Global, 2019) Özoral, Başak; Civelekoğlu, IlkeOver the last half-century, modern societies have been experiencing a drastic social, cultural, and economic transformation. The change in the behaviors and habits of consumers under the strong impact of neoliberalism demonstrates the close relationship between economy and social psychology. Globalized neoliberalization has become an unavoidable, powerful force that impacts all elements of social, cultural, and economic life and defines people's identities and their consumption preferences. This chapter addresses the link between neoliberalism and consumer behavior, with a focus on non-Western societies. It examines if there is a contradiction between the features of consumer culture and the prevailing domestic culture in these societies. Many scholars associate consumer culture with Western societies, but the authors argue that consumer culture has become a significant phenomenon even in the most religiously conservative, non-Western societies. By taking Dubai in the UAE as the case study, this chapter demonstrates how consumer culture helps redefine culture and self-identity. The chapter concludes by arguing that since individual behavior is not rational, individuals' needs are defined by the dictates of consumer culture across the globe in neoliberal times. © 2020, IGI Global. © 2020 by IGI Global.Öğe Bridging gap with QR codes: Digital literacy among youth in Istanbul(IGI Global, 2019) Naseer, Moazzam; Aktas, CelalettinThis chapter explores the basic themes and expansion of the idea of digital literacy around academia. Newspapers, which belong to a period that is over a quarter century from the year of 1909 to 1928 when the alphabet change was experienced, were chosen and job advertisements were scanned. The quantitative evaluation of the research study is based on 125 advertisements published in Ottoman Turkish in between 1909 and 1924 and on 173 different positions that take place in these advertisements. 87% of the job advertisements were given by public institutions and 13% were given by private companies. In the period researched, for 25 years, there was no important change in terms of the qualifications of the employees searched for. Through the example advertisements, we attempted to extract the mind map that managers used while searching for personnel. While in public institutions' recruitment, education level and exam effectiveness came to forefront, in the recruitment in the private sector, efficacy and ability necessities came to the forefront. © Peter Lang GmbH. These programs that mostly refer to entertainment function enable viewers to learn as well as have an enjoyable time. Among the reasons why the television viewers prefer to watch these programs are migration to larger cities and the need of the viewers, who spend more time together at home with the family and have nothing but the television at home as the neighborhood culture has disappeared, to see their equivalents and communicate their troubles. This chapter discusses the changing program preferences of the television audience and the causes affecting the transforming program contents since the early 2000s in Turkey, which is one of the countries with the highest television-viewing rate and uses the method of in-depth interview with the experts in the field. © 2014 by IGI Global. The chapter proceeds as follows: First, the authors carefully reiterate the theoretical review of job satisfaction and emotional intelligence literature. Second, the authors present the methodology, conception of the research, assumptions and limitations, measuring tools, surveys and research hypothesis used in their research. Third, the authors discuss their research findings. Finally, their research conclusions are presented. With regard to the appropriate estimation technique-regression analysis, the authors findings have demonstrated that interpersonal relationship has a significant impact on job satisfaction in the banking and finance sector. Contrarily, there is not any significant relationship between social intelligence and commitment to workplace in the banking, finance, education, computer, health, textile, automotive, electronics, or packing sectors. The contribution of this research shows that the social intelligence factor affects interpersonal relationships, working conditions and impulse control factors of banking and finance managers both directly and intensely. © 2015, IGI Global.Öğe Modelling, analysis, and improvement of energy consumption in data centres via demand side management(Elsevier, 2024) Takcı, Mehmet Türker; Gözel, Tuba; Hocaoglu, Mehmet HakanThe demand for data centers has increased in recent years due to the need for businesses to store, process, and manage vast quantities of data, as well as the swift advancements in information technology and digitalization. As more organizations adopt technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analytics, cloud computing, and storage capacity, their requirements for computational power, rapid data access, and storage capacity grow. Furthermore, the significance of data centers has been further emphasized due to the growing prevalence of remote working options, online platforms, and other digital services. Data centers typically comprise infrastructure such as high-performance servers, data storage systems, network infrastructure, cooling systems, and power conversion systems. Particularly high-performance servers and the cooling systems employed to dissipate the heat produced by them are characterized by their exceptionally high and relatively flexible energy consumption characteristics. The high energy consumption rate of data centers has become so significant that it constituted 1.7% of global energy consumption by 2022. With such high energy consumption, the flexible load characteristic of data centers allowing energy demand to be adjusted over time makes them valuable and suitable players to participate in demand-side management (DSM). This contributes to sustainability efforts by making the energy use of data centers more effective and economical. To achieve this, it is essential to develop decision-making tools that accurately estimate data center energy demand and create optimal energy management schedules. In this chapter, an analysis of trends in data center energy consumption, power models, and their role in DSM is covered. Additionally, a case study involving the development of a decision support system comprising forecasting and optimization modules is provided. It is concluded that the proposed approach can lead to in a 16.9% decrease in the energy costs of data centers. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. In order to achieve this, organizational leadership needs a better understanding of the business cultures in which their companies are operating. One of the challenges is the lack of litera- ture on ethical business cultures in emerging markets. This is also the case for Turkey, a fast growing emerging market. In this chapter, we use Donaldson and Dunfee's Integrative Social Contracts Theory (ISCT) to explore the ethical business culture of Turkey as an emerg- ing market. Hofstede's cultural dimensions are used to analyze the role of Turkish national culture in shaping business behavior. The role of religion and of the political and administrative institutional structures is also discussed in detail. The development of ethical business cultures in Turkish business organizations is also discussed, with special emphasis on challenges presented by globalization and rapid economic development. Implications for leadership are also discussed. © Cambridge University Press 2017. GulayIn today's world, a shift from conventional to digitalized marketing is increasing in the investment made in the commercial sector. This particular study analyses the growing influence of a new online advertising strategy called "FRIENDVERTISING" pertaining to social media marketing. Thereby, this chapter conducts a content analysis to investigate how social networks are interacting with each other and how consumers are oriented to certain brands advertised in a specific way. According to the results, the brands that motivate the youth to share their own advertisements in the social media more frequently receive more positive comments about their advertisements. One should decide on the following crucial criteria while applying FRIENDVERTISING practices: cultural background of audience, frequency of social media use, referring to other friends in social media (being knowledgeable and reliable about the brand), expectations of users and their previous experiences about the brand, creativity of advertisements, originality and entertaining content of advertisements, genre, as well as difficulties and opportunities of the field. © 2014, IGI Global. Researchers so far have commonly studied employee turnover, job satisfaction, and commitment. The current research intends to fill the gap by focusing on the relationship between employee turnover and profitability. In this chapter, firstly, employee turnover, its terminology, and the nature of turnover are defined. This relationship in the banking sector is analyzed and three private banks in Turkey are scrutinized. The main argument of the research is that there is an adverse relationship between employee turnover and bank profitability. Conversely, the results of the study do not thoroughly support the assumption. As a result, findings show that banks minimize the effects of economic crisis by dismissal and not recruiting new employees to replace a quitting worker or recruiting for a new position. © 2015 by IGI Global.
