Özet
Türkiye’nin çağdaş siyaset ve düşünce alanında yaşanan önemli bir yarılma, Prens Sabahattin’le ortaya çıkan harekettir. Sultan II.Abdülhamid’e muhalefetle başlayan ve muhalif gruplarla işbirliği arayan bu hareketin arka planı muhtelif yorumlara konu olmuştur. Yüksek maliyete dayanan Bağdat Demiryolu ihalesinin hangi ülke sermayesine verileceği tartışıldığı sırada Prens Sabahattin’in babası Damad Mahmud Paşa’nın devreye girmesi dikkatlerden kaçmamıştır.
An important cleavage that occurred in Turkey’s modern political and intellectual movements is the one that emerged because of Prince Sabahattin. Over the years, the background of this movement, which began as an opposition to Sultan Abdulhamid II and sought for collaboration with other opposition groups, had become the locus of various interpretations. During that time, the intervention of Prince Sabahattin’s father, Damat Mahmud Paşa, during discussions as to which country the overcosting Baghdad Railway should be tendered did not escape public attention. An important source that can help enlighten us regarding speculations surrounding the issue would be the Ottoman Archives. In addition to letters and personal declarations published until recently, it is now possible to obtain more integrated and objective information by examining state documents. The knowledge of bargains initiated during that time by the ambassadors of Paris and Brussels with Mahmud Paşa in order to return to the country can be traced from the reports they had sent to the Palace. Based on these documents regarding railway concessions and conditions stipulated by fugitive Mahmud Paşa to return to the country, this article attempts to further clarify the issue in question.
