Science communication stands out as a field with a multi-actor structure and a wide scope that focuses on scientific knowledge, innovations and developments. Science communication, which supports science through communication, aims to achieve goals such as the understanding of science by target audiences, the spread of scientific culture, and the adoption of attitudes recommended by science. In this respect, it strengthens the critical function of science in terms of the development of societies and humanity. In the literature, it is noteworthy that science communication has a multi-actor structure and a wide scope. Science communication encompasses communication between scientists, universities, the scientific industry, scientific communities, the media, the state administration, museums and science centers, and the public. It is known that scientists, who are among the actors of science communication, have a critical role in terms of science communication because they undertake functions in terms of producing scientific knowledge and also transferring scientific knowledge to the society. Social media enables scientists to communicate directly with large target audiences without any intermediaries, to share their scientific knowledge and studies with relevant audiences, and to interact with other science communication actors through the use of connected networks offered by the online environment. In this study, science communication activities carried out through social media were discussed with a focus on scientists’ science communication activities through social media. The science communication activities carried out by Turkey’s and the world’s most influential scientists on social media were examined. X (formerly Twitter) was chosen as the social media platform to be examined in the study. It is thought that the research is important in terms of being carried out on scientists, who are one of the main actors of social media and science communication, based on the capacity of social media in terms of science communication, and that it contributes to the field because it is based on an analysis to compare the science communication activities of the most influential scientists of Turkey and the world through social media. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the use of social media for science communication by scientists in line with the analysis of the content type and theme, science communication purposes and citation to other scientists and scientific organizations of scientists’ social media posts, and also a comparative study of the use of social media for science communication in the sample of the most influential scientists in Turkey and the world It is aimed to be done. The views that have come to the fore in the literature on science cmmunication in recent years indicate that social media offers an important capacity in terms of science communication. In line with the consensus in the field, this study focuses on science communication activities through social media and examines science communication activities in which sicentists are the source. A comparative analysis was made in the research, in which the science communication activities carried out by 20 scientists, who are on the list of most influential scientists in Turkey and the world, through the X platform were examined with the content analysis technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The findings of the study indicted that scientists carried out science communication activities through social media (78.1 percent) and revealed that foreign scientists (n=897) carried out science communication activitivies through social media more intensively compared to Turkish scientists (n=376). This findings is important because it indicates that the perspective put forward in the literature that social media suggets a capacity that should be used in terms of science communication is also reflected in practice. Above mentioned finding brings up the suggestion that Turkish scientists shpuld use the capacity of social media in terms of science communication more effectively. It was found that Turkish scientists mostly focused on the theme of explanation in their content (n=211), while foreign scientists focused on scientific analysis/evaluation (n=441), and both groups focused on the informative purpose of science communication. The findings also showed that scientists refer to other science actors on social media. The fact that scientists refer to other scicentists, scientific communities, international scientific organizations, public institutions, universities and the media in science communication activities through social media indicates that the multi-actor structure of science communication finds its place in science communication activities through social media. This finding coincides with the perspective in the literature that the realization of scince communication through social media has tha potential to greatly expand social networks for science communication. Science communication through social media enables scientists to transfer science communication to practive by interacting with other science communication actors through the use of connected networks offered by the online environment.
