dc.description.abstract | This research aims to discuss if the problems of commodification of identities, and spatial segregation and loss of public spheres due to exposed selves, that emerged in the mid-20th century in the city and media, are re-produced by the cyber spaces of today, like social networking sites, that have been regarded as hope against these problems before. The research is built on the idea that; "marketing" of the identities as a commodity via the symbols that refers to them, also means exposition of self, exposition of self leads to segregations and coexistence only with similar ones, and this leads to self-restraint or "self-censorship". In this qualitative and descriptive research, which is about the social networking site Twitter, firstly a "social" theoretical framework is developed, then the macro public sphere of the Twitter is analysed by the data collected from "Trending Topics" table, and the micro public sphere of the Twitter, which is about individual interactions, is anaylzed by cyber ethnographic methods. Analyzing the macro structure; it has been determined that this cyber public sphere includes both political and macro activities as well as individual and non-political interactions. Anayzing the micro structure; it is seen that the political symbols used in the profile pages are more valuable as a "commodity", and the users who exposes their identities via these symbols build networks that includes only their similar ones and avoids behave contrary to the norms of these networks, self-censors themselves. | en_US |
