Çalışmanın amacı, The Cutting Edge: The Magic Of Movie Editing (2004) adlı belgeselde kurgu düşüncesini açıklamak, kurgunun gelişimi ve yönetmen-kurgucu ilişkisi çerçevesinde analiz etmektir. Çalışmada nitel veri analizi ve betimsel analize başvurulmuş, The Cutting Edge: The Magic Of Movie Editing (2004) adlı belgeselin bölümleri tablolaştırılmıştır.
Shortly after the birth of cinema, many directors, notably Edwin S. Porter, D.W. Griffith and George Melies have discovered editing in filmmaking. During this exploration process, Life of an American Fireman and The Great Train Robbery marked an important beginning for the introduction of editing in the history of cinema. With the parallel editing developed by Porter, an important turning point was revealed in storytelling in cinema. Besides, directors such as Kuleshov Einstein, Pudovkin and Vertov started to bring a deeper philosophical perspective in the editing process. Since the early days of cinema, the process of “montage or editing” has been based on the continuity of shots and scenes with their interrelationships. This situation has prompted the audience to guess the images in the movie and to enjoy the movie. When the audience watches a finished movie on the screen, they may not know how the parts of the movie are put together. Because the editing of the images, that is, the process of movie editing requires a complex series of operations. Therefore, the transition from each image of the movie to the next gives an idea about the editing. Movie editing has more complex processes than anyone can comprehend. A movie tells the editor, director and producer what to do with all of its elements, just as editor Walter Murch tells the novelist the story line in a novel. However, in movie editing, the editor sees and examines the movie materials. Then the editor starts the rough-cut process and after this step the emotion, rhythm and harmony of the movie changes constantly until the final editing stage. The magic of the movie editing is designed to make the audience forget the processes done in the background. It has been found that the education, cultural and knowledge level of the audience are important among the reasons why the audience is mostly in a passive position in front of a movie. Each audience can receive different messages from the movie and the audience’s expectations may change. This expectation is often at the forefront during the editing phases of a movie. This study discusses the development process of editing from the first years of cinema to the present and how this process takes place, what is important in movie editing and the role of editors in the movie production process. The main subject of the study is based on the examination of the documentary film The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing (2004), which deals with the collaboration of the editor-director. The documentary Cutting Edge is a detailed production on movie editing. However, it is understood that this production is partially mentioned in academic studies or there is no study about this documentary. The importance of the study lies here. Wendy Apple directed the documentary The Cutting Edge: The Magic of the Movie Editing (2004), written by Mark Jonathan Harris. In this documentary, it is explained how editing has turned into an artistic form from the 1900s to the 2000s. The documentary includes the approaches of many editors, directors and producers on movie editing. In this study, a documentary movie about editing is analyzed. For the analysis of the movie case study and qualitative content analysis were used. The documentary consists of 14 chapters and although each chapter appears independently of each other, different layers and stages of editing art are included. In the analyzed documentary, it is stated that movie production is a collaborative process. The editing process in the movie is actually a sign that the skills of many people are gathered together. What matters in movie production is what each person’s contributions adds to the movie. Therefore, the connection of each stage of the movie with the whole is considered. After all, any mistakes or omissions at each stage of the production can be devastating for the editing of the movie as well. Here it is necessary to say that the post-production stage is an important step for the editing of a movie. Because in the editing stage, the unity of the editor and director has importance, not the large number of people. The editor must come up with original ideas at this stage by deriving from her/his own experiences. In the documentary, firstly, the magic of editing and the editor’s role in facilitating the director’s work are mentioned. Director’s opinion about the effect of the editor on the completion of the film were shared. Cutting Edge (2004), presents the view and interpretations of both editors and directors on movie editing comparatively. The idea that “good editing saves the director from suicide” comes forward. The relationship between the director and the editor is very important and the approach of the editor to the movie editing comes to the fore. It is emphasized that making a movie is equivalent to waging a war. It is also mentioned that film editing is a complex process. A work involving hundreds of people must be completed flawlessly in order for every move in editing to be done correctly. Right or wrong moves in editing are only possible if the group involved in the movie production process performs their duties and responsibilities in a healthy and correct manner. In many parts of the documentary, it is mentioned that the editor should exhibit a unique point of views during editing. It is seen that in the completion of a movie the ideas of the director and producer are as effective as the editor’s own intuition and sense of the movie. It was understood in the documentary that the editor reflects his/her own experiences on the movie. The cuts in the movie are consciously thought by the editor and each cut is designed to point to a decision moment in itself. It is narrated that the editor has a purpose and in the use of many techniques, especially of invisibility editing in movie production. This is frequently expressed by the editors in the documentary. Finally, a movie editing is based on the fact that the audience should not get bored with the movie and the editor, by taking this into account, carries out the job just like a jewelry worker.
