Öğe An Analysis of the Idea of State in Textbooks from Ottoman Empire to the Republic in terms of the Relation between Education and Power(Edam, 2011) Doğan, NecmettinThe concept of state has a specific importance for Turkish-political culture. However, the influence of textbooks in constructing the state concept in Turkish culture from Ottoman to modern Turkish Republic has not been adequately researched. In this paper, the relation between the state perception in Turkish culture and textbooks from Ottoman to the early Republic is analyzed by employing the theories of Gramsci, Althusser and Foucault. As suggested by Gramsci, Althusser and Foucault, there is strong relationship between education and political power and reproduction and redistribution of knowledge. Moving from this point, present study also argues that the changes in state perception in textbooks should be analyzed in terms of sociological changes in the late Ottoman and the early Republican period. While justice (adalet) has been an important component of Turkish-Islamic political culture, sultan was the key element of the administration of taw. Sultan was also a determining concept of Ottoman political culture and responsible for administering justice. As the new emerging elites attempted to change traditional state perception after the Tanzimat, the textbooks written under the rule of Abdulhamit II and Union and Progress Party (Ittihat vs Terakki Partisi) reflect the political and social change of the Empire. As state gained further prominence in the early republican period, another concept entered into the Turkish political discourse: democracy. It is possible to trace such changes in textbooks.Öğe Navigating university spaces as refugees: Syrian students' pathways of access to and through higher education in Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis LTD, 2020) Cin, Firdevs Melis; Doğan, NecmettinThis paper aims to explore how refugee students construct pathways of access to higher education by drawing on interviews with 15 Syrian university students studying at different universities across Turkey. The research is located within a capabilities-based human development paradigm from which it outlines the factors that enable students' transition into university and looks at how they navigate complex higher education spaces. The refugees' narratives show that access to university is intersectionally shaped by personal ambition, family encouragement, community support, and the social and education policy. On the other hand, their educational experiences highlight that higher education works as a site of justice where the everyday racism, xenophobia, and discrimination is alleviated to a significant degree through providing a peaceful and safe space for coexistence with others despite its financial and pedagogical constraints. The paper draws attention to the agency of students in mobilising the assets they have gained for the good and well-being of their communities and fleshes out the values universities should promote for refugee students who have accessed university against the odds.Öğe Osmanlı'dan Cumhuriyete ders kitaplarında devlet kavramının iktidar-eğitim ilişkisi açısından incelenmesi(2011) Doğan, NecmettinDevlet Türk siyasal kültürünün en önemli kavramlarından birisidir. Bu Osmanlı-Türk ders kitaplarında devlet kavramının tanımlanmasında da kendini göstermektedir.Öğe Political participation of refugee and host community youths: epistemic resistance through artistic and participatory spaces(Routledge, 2023) Cin, F. Melis; Walker, Craig; Süleymanoğlu-Kürüm, Rahime; Gunter, Ashley; Doğan, Necmettin; Trute, Lorna; Ahimbisibwe, Frank; Olaniyan, Tominke ChristineThe political participation of youth is growing in importance with the proliferation of youth parliaments, councils, and online campaigning. Yet, these sites are not accessible to all youth, especially those from minority, or refugee communities. Activism by these types of youth is often denounced or reduced to dehumanising narratives of their experiences. This paper aims to explore alternative spaces for and political participation of refugees through participatory art and exhibition spaces, which are critical for devising policies for pre-emptive peacebuilding and challenging potential intercommunal conflict. In this paper, we draw on a Photovoice project in Istanbul, Johannesburg and a refugee settlement in South-West Uganda (Oruchinga) that brought youth from FDPs and host communities together to reflect on their everyday experiences. All these sites are marked by increasing anti-refugee sentiments and xenophobia, where the voices of refugees are often denied and misinterpreted, making them compelling cases to elaborate on alternative participation methods and spaces for the political participation of refugees. The paper engages with the idea of epistemic (in)justice and resistance as an overarching condition to explore how the youth developed collective political voices.Öğe Türk düşüncesinde ‘mani-i terakki’ meselesi(İstanbul Ticaret Üniversitesi, 2010) Doğan, Necmettinİlerlemeye engel oluşturan unsurlar meselesi, özellikle Ernest Renan’ın bu konuda dile getirdiği iddiaların da etkisiyle 19. yüzyılın son çeyreğinde tüm İslâm coğrafyasında gündemi işgal etmişti.
