The study was carried out with the sequential mixed model approach, which is one of the mixed method designs. A total of 492 teachers working in primary, secondary and high schools located in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul province in the 2016-2017 academic year were included in the quantitative section of the study, and 20 teachers from the same district were included in the qualitative section. The “Effectiveness of the School Structure Scale” and the “Teacher Leadership Culture Scale” were used in collecting the quantitative data of the study. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis were used in the analysis of quantitative data. In the qualitative section of the study, data were collected through semi-structured questions. The content analysis was used in their analysis. In the study, it was determined that the effectiveness of the bureaucratic structure of schools was at the moderate level and the schools’ levels of having teacher leadership culture were above the moderate level. The quantitative results of the study showed that the effectiveness level of the bureaucratic school structure had positive and significant relationships with the dimensions of occupational cooperation, school administrator’s support and supportive working environment, which are the dimensions of teacher leadership culture. It was observed that the effectiveness of the bureaucratic school structure explained the behavior of school administrator’s support, the supportive working conditions and the occupational cooperation environment that are the dimensions of teacher leadership culture, by 43%, 26% and 9%, respectively. Based on the interviews held with the participants, it was revealed that teacher leadership behaviors could be developed by school principals’ constructive and cooperative behaviors and the occupational, administrative and institutional supports, which will enable the roles of teachers. Furthermore, it was shown that culture in which teachers could exhibit leadership behaviors could be strengthened by the enabling structuring of the bureaucratic school structure. © 2017 Edam.Öğe An evaluation of the transition process from teaching to the academia(Mustafa AYDIN, 2018) Balıkçı, Abdullah; Cansoy, Ramazan; Parlar, HanifiThe recent increase in the number of universities in Turkey has speeded up the transition of teachers who receive graduate education to the academia. However, this rapid transition brought a variety of problems. The present study focused on the academics’ experiences regarding the transition from teaching to the academia from a holistic perspective. The qualitative research method and the phenomenological design were employed in the study. The participants were seven academics who passed to the academia from a teaching career. Convenient sampling and snowball sampling were used in the selection of the participants. The research data were gathered through an interview form. An audio-recorder was used not to lose data during the interviews. In the analysis of the data, the descriptive analysis technique was employed. As for the reliability and validity of the study, data triangulation, external revision, direct quotations and referee evaluation were put into practice. Three themes were revealed as a result of the data analysis. These themes were the teaching profession and process, graduate education process and the process of becoming an academic. The findings of the study are as follows: The teaching profession was practiced willingly and with a human-oriented approach. Teaching was seen as a way of serving the society through students. Graduate education was regarded as a difficult process, but expectations overcame the difficulties. Since the participants had to work as a teacher and learn as an undergraduate student at the same time could be challenging both financially and psychologically. Academicianship was perceived as a place for critical and scientific thinking. The transition to the academia was followed by the efforts to adapt to the new institutional and physical environment. Based on the study, it can be suggested that the teaching profession should be made more development-oriented through graduate education, and legal regulations should be made to ease the bureaucratic difficulties teachers experience while receiving graduate education.Öğe Examining relationship between teachers' self-efficacy and job satisfaction(Horizon Research Publishing, 2017) Türkoğlu, Muhammet Emin; Cansoy, Ramazan; Parlar, HanifiTeaching in the 21st century poses many challenges for teachers, and thus, they need to take on more roles in their schools to meet the expectations of students, parents and the school community. Design/methodology/approach: This study employed a cross-sectional design to illustrate the relationships among authoritarian leadership, trust in the principal, silence and affective commitment using path analysis evidence provided by 409 K–12 teachers. Findings: The findings revealed that authoritarian leadership indirectly affected teacher commitment through trust in the principal and acquiescent silence. Furthermore, trust in the principal played a partial mediating role between authoritarian leadership and defensive silence. Authoritarian leadership behaviours decreased teachers' affective commitment by decreasing trust in the principal and increasing organisational silence. Originality/value: Although leadership and culture have been studied intensively in recent years, authoritarian leadership, which is more commonly seen in Eastern societies, has been less studied in school contexts in the Middle East and Asia. Thus, this study contributes to the literature by examining the factors that might influence affective commitment in schools in an urban setting: authoritarian leadership, silence and trust in school principals.Öğe Instructional leadership as a predictor of collaborative culture in schools(Taylor & Francis, 2021) Parlar, Hanifi; Türkoğlu, Muhammet Emin; Cansoy, RamazanThe purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between school principals’ instructional leadership and collaborative culture in schools. This study employed a qualitative approach and case study design. We chose this school because of some of its characteristics, such as being an international school applying International Baccalaureate programs, having top students from all over the country with very high degrees, good extracurricular facilities, and its success rate in university entrance examinations. We interviewed the school principal. At the same time, we reviewed some documents for further analysis. We find that leadership is shared in the school, the quality of religious education and positive sciences is considered important, the teachers are highly committed, and the school–society relationship is quite robust. Additionally, the behavior of the school principal is generally affected by the values of Islam. The school principal makes decisions with the stakeholders (shura) while trying to maximize the benefits of the school community (maslaha). Furthermore, this high school incorporates a combination of Islamic tradition and modernism into its curricula and daily practices.Öğe Leadership development in students: Teachers' opinions regarding activities that can be performed at schools(Horizon Research Publishing, 2017) Parlar, Hanifi; Türkoğlu, Muhammet Emin; Cansoy, RamazanThis study aims to examine teachers' opinions regarding the activities that can be performed at schools to ensure leadership development in students. Sonuçlar ilgili literatür bağlamında tartışılmıştır.Öğe Öğretmen adaylarının özyeterlikleri ile sınıf yönetim stratejileri arasındaki ilişki(Deomed Reklam ve Yayıncılık, 2016) Parlar, Hanifi; Cansoy, RamazanThe aim of this study is to determine the level of pre-service teachers’ perceptions of self-efficacy and classroom management strategies and to demonstrate the relationship between them. The study group of the research which is in the relational type model consists of 800 pre-service teachers, 609 women and 191 men, who take pedagogical formation lessons at ‹stanbul Ticaret University in 2014–2015 academic year. 60% of the study group consists of students attending arts and sciences faculties, and 40% are from different faculties such as engineering, business administration and nursery. The data of the research was collected by means of two scales, namely the General Self-Efficacy Scale which was developed by Schwarzer and Jerusalem (1995) and adopted by Aypay (2010); and Classroom Management Strategies Survey, developed by Çakmak, Kayabafl› and Ercan (2008). During the analysis of the data, arithmetic average, t-tests and correlation statistical techniques were used. In the study, self-efficacy levels of the ones who chose the pedagogical formation program to become a teacher were higher than those who chose the program with different reasons. It was seen that perception of self-efficacy of teacher candidates didn’t differ according to gender, age and education level variables. According to the conclusions reached in the study, pre-service teachers’ perceptions of self-efficacy and classroom management strategies were found very high. In the study, a significant, positive, moderate correlation between perceptions of self-efficacy and classroom management strategies of pre-service teachers was found.Öğe Okul gelişiminin bir yordayıcısı olarak öğretmen profesyonelizmi(Ahi Evran Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi, 2017) Cansoy, Ramazan; Parlar, HanifiBu araştırmanın amacı, öğretmen profesyonelizmi ile okul gelişimi arasındaki ilişkilerin incelenmesidir. Elde edilen bulgular ilgili alan yazın ile ilişkili olarak tartışılmıştır.Öğe Organisational socialisation and collective teacher efficacy: The mediating role of school collaborative culture(Ejer, 2021) Türkoğlu, Muhammet Emin; Cansoy, Ramazan; Parlar, HanifiPurpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between organisational socialisation, collaborative culture in schools, and collective teacher efficacy.
