The effects of business and finance conditions on the tourism stock markets: An empirical investigation from Turkey
(John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2022) Katircioglu, Setareh; Katircioglu, Salih
This study investigates interactions between the stock performance of tourism firms and business and finance conditions in a vast tourist destination country, Turkey. Results of the study confirm the long-term significant effects of the business and finance environment on the stock performance of Turkish tourism firms using a stock valuation model. Furthermore, the study shows that the tourism stock markets are highly sensitive to aggregate macroeconomic and industrial activity, financial markets, tourism climate, exchange rate markets and country's inflation levels since these aggregates exert highly elastic effects on the tourism stock prices.

Links between growth, trade and financial openness in South Africa: An empirical investigation
(John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2022) Katircioglu, Setareh; Katircioglu, Salih; Irani, Farid
This study aims to confirm an empirical link between financial openness, foreign trade and income growth in South Africa. Although domestic credits, trade and growth are cointegrated, the findings indicate that no such link can be observed between money supply and exports as exports are a result of foreign demand and hence subject to foreign monetary factors rather than domestic financial development. The results of causality analyses reveal that the export-led and supply-leading hypotheses are confirmed for South Africa. Money supply in South Africa is also output driven. Finally, the study shows that changes in domestic credits precede significant changes in trade and growth in South Africa. As a result, this study suggests that the creation of domestic credits is a significant force behind trade and aggregate income in the region.

The role of shadow economies in ecological footprint quality: empirical evidence from Turkey
(SPRINGER HEIDELBERG, 2020) Koksal, Cihat; Isik, Mehtap; Katircioglu, Salih
The purpose of this research study is to investigate the role of shadow economies in the levels of ecological footprint for the case of Turkey. Annual data set ranging from 1961 to 2014 was used with this respect. The results of this study verify the long-term and positively elastic impact of shadow economic activities on the level of ecological footprint in Turkey; that is, 1 % change in shadow economic activities results in a 1.008% change in ecological footprint in the same direction. This study, therefore, reaches a significant conclusion that in Turkey, shadow economies are long-term and essential drivers of environmental pollution.

The role of the financial system in entrepreneurship trends in the European Union
(Routledge, 2024) Yalinç, Bakiye; Katircioglu, Salih
The current study examines the effects of financial systems and instruments on entrepreneurship trends and activities in the European Union member states. Results from panel data econometric procedures exhibit that financial markets and instruments exert statistically significant effects on the volume of both male and female entrepreneurial activities in the union. Results show that financial system mainly impacts male and female entrepreneurial intentions rather than their early stage entrepreneurial activities; furthermore, entrepreneurial intentions and activities are negatively linked to the financial system, which might be due to the lack of access to finance and regulatory barriers among the others, which are outlined at the end of this study.

The role of tourism in environmental pollution: evidence from Malta
(Routledge, 2022) Katircioglu, Setareh; Katircioglu, Salih
This article searches the effects of tourism development onemission pollutants in Malta using (1) the autoregressivedistributed lag approach and (2) two datasets which are annualdata from 1971 to 2018 and quarterly data from 1990Q1 tı2018Q4 as per data availability. Findings confirm that tourism, energy usage, and carbon dioxide emissions are in a long-termequilibrium relationship; carbon emissions converge rapidlytowards the long-term equilibrium path through tourism andenergy consumption channels. Findings also reveal that growthin tourism results in significant changes in energy consumptionand, therefore, in CO2emissions. Tourism has positive effects oncarbon emissions in shorter periods. Still, these effects turn out tobe harmful in the more extended periods beyond the peak pointof carbon emissions which correspond to 1,063,213 milliontourists. Therefore, this study strongly confirms the existence ofan inverted U-shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesisfor Malta.
