Calculation of gamma-ray buildup factors for some medical materials
(ICE Publishing, 2022) Celen, Yonca Yahsi; Sarihan, Mucize; Almisned, Ghada; Tekin, Huseyin Ozan; Ekmekçi, Ismail
In recent years, novel materials with protective qualities against ionizing radiation have been discovered. Important concepts include the continued use of X-rays for diagnosis and treatment, particularly in the radiological energy range, as well as the calculation of the radiation attenuation properties of such materials, the buildup factor and the attenuation coefficients. Radiation shielding is characterized by parameters such as the linear attenuation coefficient (cm?1), equivalent atomic number (Z eq), exposure buildup factor (EBF) and exposure absorption buildup factor (EABF). Radiation is often employed in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and accurate calculation of the absorbed dosage during radiation treatment, which is one of the most popular cancer treatments. It relies on accurate modeling of the radiation beams administered to the patient and their interaction with the environment in which they are absorbed. In this research, the shielding characteristics of water, fat and bone related to human tissue are investigated. Using the Phy-X/PSD software, the equivalent atomic number (Z eq), EBF and EABF were determined.

Medical radiation shielding in terms of effective atomic numbers and electron densities of some glasses
(Elsevier, 2023) Akkurt, Iskender; Alomari, Ali; Imamoglu, Meltem; Ekmekçi, Ismail
For more than at decade, oxy-fuoride glasses are the main interest for many researchers. This is due to the importance of glasses as it is used for many different applications. Radiation shielding is one of the important application as it is important for human health. In this study, the gamma ray shielding characters of glasses formulated as (20-x)CaF2-xAl2O3–20Bi2O3–59B2O3–CuO (x = 3,6,9,12,15) were investigated. This is done obtaining of linear attenuation coefficients (LAC), effective atomic number (Zeff) and effective electron density (Neff) using Phy-X/PSD code.

Prediction of gamma ray spectrum for 22Na source by feed forward back propagation ANN model
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2023) Teke, Çağatay; Akkurt, İskender; Arslankaya, Seher; Ekmekçi, Ismail; Günoğlu, Kadir
The radiation has been used in a variety of different fields since its discovery and thus its measurement becomes vital in these industries. Different type detector may be used to measure gamma rays depends on the purposes of measurements. Gamma ray energy spectrum is an important to determine either elemental analysing of a sample or radiation shielding purposes. On the other hand, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) may be used to predict and analysing of gamma-ray spectrum. In this study, gamma ray spectrum from 22Na source detected in NaI (Tl) detector was estimated by ANN. There have been installed ten different ANN models to find the network structure that produces the best predictive value for the gamma ray spectrum NaI (Tl) Detector. Estimation study has been continued with the ANN model with be possessed of lowest error value. ANN model was created by using energy, distance and gamma-rays energy spectrum (called Io) values. In the ANN model developed using the feed forward back propagation algorithm, were used artificial neurons two in the input layer, ten in the hidden layer and one in the output layer. For the case of present work, the experimental data was used 70% for education, 20% for validation and 10% for testing. The estimated values obtained with the ANN model were compared with the experimental results and a good correlation has been found between them (R2 = 0.99).

Variation in gamma ray shielding properties of glasses with increasing boron oxide content
(De Gruyter Open Ltd, 2022) Almisned, Ghada; Akkurt, Iskender; Tekin, Huseyin Ozan; Yuksek, Ismail; Ekmekçi, Ismail
The study of radiation shielding properties for a material is an important part of research in scientific world. It is expressed in terms of the linear linear coefficients (LAC) which can also be used to obtain some other parameters. The gamma shielding properties of glass with addition of boron oxides in different amounts were studied, thereby obtaining linear attenuation coefficients (LAC), mean free path (mfp), Exposure Buildup factor (EBF) which were calculated using Phy-X/PSD code. It was found that increasing boron oxide content of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 (w %) in glass increased the gamma attenuation coefficients.
