Öğe Change and continuity in national economic planning: A methodological survey(Springer International Publishing, 2015) Babacan, MehmetUnderstanding economic development as a change in economic life, Schumpeter (2004, p. 63) argues that the explanation of economic development should be sought at the social facts outside the economic theory. Changes in economic data may be just pointing out to a simple adaptation of the economy while economic development encompasses wider and deeper changes in the structure of the economy. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.Öğe Gauging the Ethicality of Students in Turkish Institutions of Higher Education(Springer Netherlands, 2017) Beekun, R.I.; Alayoğlu, Nihat; Öztürk, Ali Osman; Babacan, Mehmet; Westerman, J.W.We investigated the ethical behavior of Turkish university students to (a) compare the difference in ethical behavior between business students and non-business students, (b) examine the impact of key contingency variables on how they make decisions when confronted with an ethical dilemma, and (c) investigate the process underlying the ethical behavior of Turkish students. Data were collected from business students (n = 158) at a major private university in Western Turkey. The results indicate that a Turkish student’s peers, marital status, and education level exert a significant effect on their ethical behavior. Further, business students specifically differed from non-business students in their enhanced use of egoism when confronted with an ethical dilemma. The results of this research may have important educational policy implications for business ethics in Turkey. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.Öğe Perceptions of College Students and Attitudes of Private and Public Employees towards Business Ethics(Igiad-Turkish Entrepreneurship & Business Ethics Assoc, 2012) Alayolu, Nihat; Ozturk, Ali Osman; Babacan, MehmetThis empirical study aims to contribute to the limited number of comparative studies in the business ethics literature by contrasting business ethics perceptions of undergraduate students with ethical practices of business and public sector employees. Based on the deontological theory of ethics, a survey was designed, and conducted with 135 undergraduate students, 148 private and 117 public sector employees mostly located in Istanbul. Statistical analysis of independent t-test and descriptive statistics indicated that ethical attitudes of private and public sector employees significantly different that students ethical perceptions, while there is no significant difference of ethical attitudes between private and public sector employees. The difference on perceptions is more evident in students-private sector employees' case while there are significant dispersions over the private and public sector employees over the role of civil servants, according to the results.Öğe Sector-based analysis of the education-occupation mismatch in the Turkish labor market(Edam, 2015) Mercan, Murat; Karakaş, Mesut; Çitçi, Sadettin Haluk; Babacan, MehmetThe aim of this study was to investigate the existence of sectorial undereducation and overeducation problems in the Turkish labor market. In order to cope with this issue, the 2009 Household Labor Force Survey (TurkStat), which covers 145,934 individuals within 27 sectors, was utilized. An objective measure of education-occupation mismatch based on the mean level of schooling was used as the main tool in the analysis. The results revealed two important points. Firstly, high levels of undereducation and overeducation problems in the sectoral job groups were found. Secondly, the results showed that these problems are not specific to a few sectors, but they are widespread among many sectoral job groups, which has created serious problems for the Turkish economy. Moreover, we employed Oaxaca decomposition to investigate the effects of overeducation and undereducation on wage outcomes, and the findings indicate that education-occupation mismatches in the Turkish labor market are also reflected on such outcomes. Finally, the Turkish labor market penalizes workers who acquire less education than the adequate level to perform their jobs, whereas it rewards the workers who obtain more education than the adequate level, but not to a considerable extent. © 2015 EDAM.Öğe Whither an axis shift: A perspective from Turkey's foreign trade(2011) Babacan, MehmetOur analysis will discuss Turkey's changing direction, if any, in terms of its trade orientation. This paper argues that Turkey's trade sector has maintained its long-standing direction towards the major European Union (EU) member countries with only minor setbacks, while new dimensions in bilateral trade have emerged not only due to Turkey's changing foreign policy considerations but also global economic transformations. Moreover, this paper argues that Turkey's trade partners are subject to these changes, as the epicentre of the global economy shifts, i.e. to the East. In the first section, a brief introduction with regards to Turkey's foreign trade under the AK Party's administration-since 2002 will be provided. The second section will discuss the scope of regional and worldwide changes in trade patterns and analyze the recent shift in Turkey's trade orientation in the context of Asia's economic and political rise in early 21st century. The Third section will focus on the role of political dynamics in Turkey's trade sector and structural issues.
