İngilizce ‘de “agent” ve dilimizde ise, “acente” olarak kullanılmaktadır. 15. yüz yıldan itibaren denizciliğin gelişmesine bağlı olarak ortaya çıkan özellikle gemi acenteliği mesleği, gerek Türkiye'de gerekse tüm dünyada denizcilik sektörünün en önemli meslek faaliyetlerinden biri halini almıştır. Bu önemli faaliyeti meslek edinen gemi acenteleri, bağımsız bir tacirdir ve Yeni Türk Ticaret Kanunun Birinci Kitap Acentelik başlığını taşıyan Yedinci Kısım'da yer alan 102 ilâ 123. madde hükümlerine tabidir. Çalışmamızda bu hükümler nazara alınmak suretiyle gemi acentelerinin tabi olduğu hükümler değerlendirilecektir.The Latin root of the word agency is "Agere" which means “do”. In the English language, this is called “agent” and in our language we say “acente”. Due to the development of mari-time shipping since the 15th century, the shipping agency has become one of the most impor-tant professional activities in the maritime sector. Shipping agents act as independent merc-hant and, therefore, they are subject to the provisions that are located in New Turkish Com-mercial Code, First Book, articles 102-123.
